Summary:
This article talks about how everyday Americans take fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendys, etc., for granted. People are so caught up in their work schedule and life at home and they figure that these places will be a quick place to stop to grab dinner. However, these people are not considering the health effects that could follow from these fast food restaurants. People continue to eat at these places because it makes them feel happy. On the contrary, if people continue to eat at these places over and over again, they can develop life long health problems or even death. There have been numerous studies on the case of obesity and results have shown that excess fat makes it more likely that a person will develop health problems later on in life. These problems could include high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated levels of blood cholesterol, arthritis, etc. This food intake is only part of the problem of Americans becoming obese. Many Americans now choose to drive to places that are in walking distance. In addition, they choose to take the elevator or escalator instead of climbing the stairs. Clearly, Americans have become very lazy and choose to take the easy way out. Not only can obesity have an effect on our physical health, but also our emotional health. Many studies have shown that people who are obese are less likely to marry, lack self-esteem and have trouble at their profession. In the end, its the Americans that will suffer from these fast food restaurants and if people don't change their eating habits, there will be trouble for them in the future.
My Reaction:
This article gives good information about the health problems that could follow from eating at fast food restaurants. Obesity is a huge problem in America today so much that the United States was named the fattest nation on Earth. I was shocked to hear that our nation was named this and it just goes to show that Americans need to change the way they eat. Parents of children in elementary schools get caught up in their everyday schedules and take their kids to fast food restaurants for dinner. It also doesn't help that theses places give out toys with the meal. This just makes the child want to go eat at these places even more. Parents want the best for their children but if they keep bringing them to fast food restaurants for meals, they could be the ones who influence how their child's health will be in the future.
Summary:
This article talks about how obesity is one of the biggest problems among Americans today. The article tells the reader that the number of American children and teenagers have doubled over the past decade. It also says that at least 300,000 Americans die each year to obesity related diseases. Today, the United States Food Industry markets high-fat, super-sized, and high-sugared foods. When Americans walk into a fast food restaurant and place their order, many of the people taking their order ask if they want to super-size it. This is one of the many reasons Americans tend to overeat when they go to these places and they don't take into account the amount of fat and calories that they are already taking in. In addition, physical education is being dropped by schools as they are welcoming in fatty, high-calorie foods. Also, children are spending their time inside after school instead of getting the physical activity that is required outside. Many children spend their extra time inside in front of the computer, playing video games or just watching television. The article shows that "obesity is the fastest growing illness and death in the United States" (“CQ Researcher Online - Entire Report”). The article continues with how soda prices in schools have dropped along with regular physical-education courses or recess, giving children in elementary schools less time to burn off calories and get their daily physical activity. In addition, little money is being spent to educate children and consumers about healthy eating choices and the nutritional value of foods at these restaurants.
My Reaction:
This article showed that Americans are having the most problem with the foods that they eat which results in many health effects. As readers can tell from the article, fast food restaurants aren't helping reduce this problem. I was shocked to hear that many schools have dropped their physical-education course or shortened children's recesses. In my opinion, getting physical activity as a child is one of the most important times in a childs day. Not to mention that children don't go out after school to get their daily exercise. Instead of playing sports, children are resorting to video games, computer games, and things they don't require physical activity. Children in elementary schools are becoming lazy and continue to eat these fatty foods. We need to spread the word about leading a healthy life by eating the right nutritious foods and getting the right amount of exercise each day. In my opinion, students should be informed at an early age so they understand the consequences of eating at fast food restaurants and not getting the daily recommended amount of exercise each day.
Summary:
This article is about how obesity is a threat to your health and that if you don't get the daily exercise you need, it could lead to obesity. There are many national concerns about how many adult Americans exercise but there is more of a concern on how much the nation's children get exercise. Youth fitness in the United States has not improved and the article states that "Forty percent of children 5 through 8 show at least one heart disease risk factor, whether it's physical inactivity, obesity, elevated cholesterol or high blood pressure (“CQ Researcher Online - Entire Report”)." Today, the nation's number one cause of death is heart disease. Many Americans do exercise for different reasons, with the main motivation of better health. This article shows that regular exercise can help prevent heart disease and also prevent people from becoming overweight. Every child should engage in a program that involves physical activity in order to prevent children from becoming obese. Also, this allows children to work off calories and some fat. The teachers and staff of elementary schools need to promote exercise to the children otherwise the children won't know any better. They need to teach the children that exercising on a regular basis will enhance their energy and they will live a healthier lifestyle. Most children in elementary schools are not meeting the needs of exercising that a child their age needs because they are not exposed to how and why they should keep themselves healthy and fit throughout their life. According to the article, most 6-17 year olds can not run a quarter of a mile. Percentages of students who participate daily in physical education and who engage in life time physical activity have dropped vigorously. In order to live a healthy life, children need to exercise on a daily basis which could help them fight off heart disease.
My Reaction:
After I read this article, I was surprised that this many children were not getting their daily physical activity. It shocks me that many children would rather be inside playing video games or watching television because children usually have so much energy. I believe that every child should be actively involved in some sort of physical education at school everyday. Also, informing children at a young age that physical activity is important in every day life is essential to leading a healthy lifestyle. As soon as we reach out to children in elementary schools and start teaching them what being overweight can cause, the community will start living a better, healthier life. Children need to be exposed to the effects that can happen if one becomes obese. They also need to be informed on what foods are good to eat and what foods to stay away from. This, in my opinion, will help better educate children in schools. In addition, having children take part in physical activity during school will benefit them by getting their exercise in for the day.
Summary:
This article informs the reader that starting an unhealthy eating style at a young age is very dangerous for the child because he or she could develop multiple problems when their older. Young children in our schools today are not getting the physical activity required each day. Many young children are inactive and spend a lot of their time in front of the television or the computer which leads to child obesity. What turns children off to fitness could include putting winning above everything else, never improving, getting ridiculed by friends, family or coaches, doing the same thing over and over again, or getting forced to play something. In today's world, children have become overweight and less fit then previous generations. Young people today have have more ways of keeping fit than did any other generation. Only about one half of United States children get regular exercise and one fourth don't take part in any physical activity at all. The conveniences of modern technology get most of the blame because they are preventing children from getting their physical activity of the day.
My Reaction:
Technology today as we know it is growing rapidly more then ever. It is also putting a damper on the amount of physical activity that young children get each day. In my opinion, students should be involved in a physical activity in school every day and they should be able to have choices. No one wants to be told what to do but allowing children choices will open their mind and allow them to explore different kinds of physical activities that they may have an interest in. I was surprised to hear that one fourth of young children don't get any exercise at all. When they become older, they may have to deal with a lot of the effects that follow obesity, or no physical activity. Having a daily exercise plan will allow children to live a healthier lifestyle and will help prevent becoming overweight.
Summary:
This article talks about how people can receive diabetes and one of the most common ways to be diagnosed with diabetes is becoming obese. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is a deadly and costly disease. This number of people diagnosed with this disease in growing rapidly and is a serious problem that many Americans face today. The number of people with these cases has increased 41% over the last decade. Lack of exercise and is one of the main key factors that result in this disease. There are two types of diabetes. Type one is where the pancreas fails to produce insulin for the body. Type two involves the body not being able to use insulin. According to research, 16 million Americans suffer from this disease and the number continues to grow (“CQ Researcher Online - Entire Report”). Research also shows that as the number of people with obesity grows, so does the number of people diagnosed with diabetes. Today, numerous people in the United States are not eating correctly and are not exercising. This causes people to become overweight with a risk of becoming diagnosed with diabetes. The article says that we need to spread the word about staying healthy by eating the right food and exercising on a daily basis in order to prevent such diseases.
My Reaction:
Before reading this article, I did not think that diabetes was a major problem in America today. After reading this article, I now know that diabetes is a rising problem and that we need to spread the word about this disease at young ages so children are aware of what can happen to you if you don't take care of your body. I believe that students in elementary schools should be exposed to information about obesity and what risks can come with it. In addition, school lunches should be encouraging healthy eating by providing the children with food such as fresh fruit, milk, sandwiches, etc., at school meals.
